Documenting Reconstruction of 'The Gobbins Cliff-Face Walk'.
This formidable beast of a ladder was our access point to an ongoing project where we were documenting the reconstruction of a famous landmark called The Gobbins in Islandmagee, County Antrim.
The Gobbins is a cliff walk that skirts the shoreline at the bottom of a sheer cliff. This was the only access point to the bottom of the cliff face and to where the bulk of the restoration was taking place. Climbing down this and back up again with camera equipment was an experience never to be forgotten. Needless to say there was all manner of safety, but still… not for the faint of heart.
One year later and we delivered a film that documents every single step of the redevelopment process.
The Gobbins is one of Europe’s most dramatic coastal walkways and it is undergoing an exciting redevelopment.
The redevelopment includes several exciting features:
- 60m-High Panoramic Stepway: Imagine walking along a breathtaking stepway with panoramic views of the Antrim Coast.
- Upgrades to Clifftop Path: Enhancements to the existing clifftop path will make it safer and more enjoyable for visitors.
- New Welcome Hub: A modern Welcome Hub building will serve as the starting point for both the coastal and cliff-top paths.
- Improved Visitor Features: The project aims to address operational, health, safety, and capacity considerations.
- Virtual Reality Experience: Cutting-edge virtual reality technology will allow everyone to share in the wonder of The Gobbins.
Economic Impact:
When completed, The Gobbins Phase II is expected to contribute approximately £9.5 million annually to the Northern Ireland economy. It will cement its place as one of the region’s top tourist venues, drawing up to 225,000 visitors from outside Northern Ireland each year.
Circular Route and Views:
A spectacular ingress structure will connect the existing coastal path at The Gobbins with the current cliff-top path.
Visitors will experience the walk as a seamless circular route, taking in magnificent views of the stunning Antrim Coast.
In summary, The Gobbins’ redevelopment promises an enhanced and inclusive experience, making it even more captivating for locals and global visitors alike!
