Overview

American Connections was produced for Tourism Northern Ireland and Discover Northern Ireland, exploring the historical and cultural ties between Northern Ireland and the United States. Using the ancestral connection of American writer John Steinbeck as part of the narrative, the film brings together history, poetry and landscape to reveal how stories and identities have travelled between both sides of the Atlantic.

The Brief

The challenge was to go beyond conventional destination marketing. Rather than simply showing visitors where they could go, the film needed to give American audiences a deeper reason to connect with Northern Ireland, exploring the historical and cultural ties that have linked both places across generations.

Our Approach

Rather than presenting a conventional tour of destinations, the film was built around storytelling. John Steinbeck’s connection to Northern Ireland provided a cultural thread through the piece, with poetry and historical references complemented by evocative footage of the landscapes and locations connected to the story. The result was a film where the landscape wasn’t simply something beautiful to look at. It became part of the narrative.

The Outcome

American Connections gave Tourism Northern Ireland a film specifically shaped for an important international audience.

By approaching Northern Ireland through shared history and culture, the film offered American visitors something deeper than a collection of destinations: a personal connection to the place and its stories.

What This Project Demonstrates

The strongest destination stories don’t always begin with the destination itself. Finding a cultural or historical connection familiar to the audience can provide a much more powerful way into a place.

Key Takeaway

Sometimes the strongest reason to visit a place is discovering that part of your own story is already there.
